Planet Poultry tells the story of five friends who work together in a chicken processing factory in the North East of England. Each of them is struggling with their own personal dilemas but living in the hope that things can only get better. One day, something monumental happens that changes their lives forever...In this gritty story, we come face to face with real-life issues such as: domestic violence, addiction, depression and the heart-rending tick of the biological clock. Yet there is also an injection of humour and warmth which is certain to keep the reader enthralled and feeling great empathy for these realistic characters who could so easily be their very own neighbours or friends. Whilst reading Planet Poultry, we are taught some valuable lessons: the importance of good friends, to always have hope and never give up because we never know what lies round the corner; and, most importantly, that revenge is a dish best served cold!
Her challenge is to work as helper to Julian. She is given only a few weeks to heal a bunch of hopeless cases who reside at The Willows: an innocent-looking cul-de-sac of houses on the Elmwood Estate.
It sounds easy doesn’t it?
It takes around two weeks for her visible self to evolve. She uses that inconspicuous time to go from house to house un-detected, gathering information about what issues her neighbours need help in solving. When she first meets them all, she introduces herself as Ruby Roberts, aromatherapist and counsellor. This is her ploy to get them to trust her enough to carry out healing.
One by one Ruby unearths the secrets which lie behind each front door of The Willows. She then helps her new friends to make positive changes in their lives. But time is running out for her and she still hasn’t made peace with Luke since he stormed off, furious when she blurted out everything about how she was Rebekah. And fourteen-year-old Obnoxious Audrey still has no intention of allowing Ruby’s hands anywhere near her.
Ruby arranges a barbeque as a goodbye to her larger-than-life friends and neighbours. She’s growing weaker and fears her time is up. Her friends believe she’s going away on a course, when really she knows it’s time for her to go ‘downstairs’. She’s accepted that she’s failed to succeed in the task Angel Julian assigned to her. Finally she hears from Luke. He’s seen a newspaper article which has changed his opinion of Ruby. But he’s out of town and stranded in a broken-down van. Will he reach Ruby in time to explain what information he’s learned? Will Ruby’s opportunity to carry out healing on both Luke and Audrey, her final two hopeless cases, come too late?
Just when Ruby thinks there might be some light at the end of the tunnel, she discovers a monumental secret that young Audrey can no longer keep to herself.
Ruby is so weak by this stage that she fades away in Luke’s arms. She finds herself back in Angel Julian’s heavenly classroom where with her fellow students, who are also waiting to learn their fate.
